Empathy Machines (EM) is an international production company uniquely positioned to finance, produce, and distribute compelling content across major global territories, with a focus on US, Japan, and China.  Based in Los Angeles and Tokyo, EM’s strength resides in its ability to create cross-geographical relationships with content creators, financiers, and distribution partners.  EM is run by long-time producing partners Hans Canosa and Ash Nukui.

EM’s upcoming slate contains a variety of projects with an emphasis on developing IP with strong mixed media potential, including film, television, mobile apps, comic books and books.  In 2018, EM’s slate includes: THE EMISSARY, a $60M sci-fi feature film in English intended as a US-China co-production; CARTRIDGE, a $20M sci-fi thriller feature film in Mandarin for the Chinese market.

Under Mr. Nukui’s leadership, EM is developing a diverse slate of projects in Japan that spans film and television, including the development of international formats in the Japan market, including the global phenomenon reality competition THE VOICE. EM partners Hans Canosa and Ash Nukui produced The Sniffer, a Japanese-language remake of a top 5 rated Ukrainian TV police procedural. The Sniffer enjoyed a successful 7 episode run on NHK in the fall of 2016. A 73-minute follow-up special The Sniffer movie will air on NHK on March 21, 2018.
